Troubled Waters

Where do you fix your eyes?

I'm the kind of  person who sees the little black dot on a clean sheet of paper. But as long as I could shrug the bad things away I know I could get away with it happily. As if nothing is wrong. Yet that wouldn't always be the scenario. Problems don't always trickle down in droplets, sometimes, they surge in like heavy rains of a typhoon.

As a fourth-year college student stuck in a high-schooler mindset I have a lot to take in. I usually quit when my body senses a slight jolt of pain and hardship. The past few weeks were the hardest weeks I had to endure in my whole academic life. If I had to rank all the semesters from 1-10, 1 being the toughest and challenging and 10 being the happy-go-lucky. This semester would be a flat 1, no doubt. I couldn't imagine how my thesis sem would be likeeee.

24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning. Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”
Matthew 14:24-26

I saw myself in Jesus' disciples from the story of Jesus walking on water. When troubles come I tend to forget that I have Jesus on my side. That He is far stronger and greater than anything. I deal with life based on the things I can handle and the things I couldn't do. Too bad if it's the latter, which is most likely to happen and a major uh-oh! The real problem is I lose my focus on Jesus making me fearful and anxious.

27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. Don’t be afraid, he said. Take courage. I am here!

But Jesus being ever merciful and gracious, He comes just in time to save me and rescue me from my situation and my own pit of fear. He forgives me for my lack of faith. There are just so many instances that Jesus has to remind me to be strong, to be courageous and to take heart in this world because He already knows that I will be encountering many difficult times. And it would be messy. In spite of that, He promised not to leave us nor forsake us.

Ironically, just like the disciples, when we just had an encounter with Jesus we still cannot fully put our trust in Him. Problems come again and our faith trembles and shakes before it. That's the hamartia of being a human and especially a Christian. We are so vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy. Yet in our weakness, once we are in Christ, He will be our strength.

Let us always shift our focus on God again whenever little fear creeps back in. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus and remember all those times we were saved by His amazing grace and love. It is our source of hope that in His faithfulness for a long time we know He wouldn't let us down now. Let us trust His good and perfect plan to work together for our good; that no matter what comes in our way He will be the one who will guide us and pick us up when we fall down.

What a joy it is to know that there is a hope in a Saviour!
